Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) are a major improvement on video cassette recording. DVRs use computer hard drives to store images so there are no tapes to wear out or change daily.

Access to recorded images is instant and the DVR is always recording, unlike tapes which can run out or have to be stopped when reviewing footage.

Many stand alone units have built-in CD Burners that allow segments of images to be burned onto CDs for archiving purposes. ‘General’ users are able to view and download images but they are not able to edit or make any changes to the recordings. Only the system administrator or manager can control the system.
